A judge in Indiana has found a new way to punish people who get caught with illegal gambling machines, sentencing them to watch the machines be destroyed, that’s what he did to an Indiana man this morning.
Rodger L. Heer, a Lafayette businessman, was sentenced today in Tippecanoe Superior Court 1, and although the sentence did not include jail time, there is consequences the man will have to face after pleading guilty to promoting professional gambling.
The count he pleaded to is a Class D felony, and his plea was entered back in September, but the sentencing was this morning and he received unsupervised probation and $10,000 in restitution.
The most surprising part of the sentence, however, is that the judge has ordered that Heer must watch as the gambling machines that were taken from his nightclub back in May of 2004, be destroyed.
38 machines in total were taken from The Mirage after an investigation showed that Heer was conducting an illegal gambling business. the police were tipped off to the machines by people who claimed to have lost money in them.
To investigate, the police sent out undercover officers to play the machines with specially marked bills, and once they confirmed their suspicions, they raided the establishment.
This is not the first time Heer has been involved in a gambling case as he was prosecuted in the early ’90s after being investigated for similar charges to the one he was sentenced for Friday.
